In recent years, there has been an explosion in people's interest in gaining better health, welfare for animals and reducing our impact, or footprint on our planet. A vegan diet can be our individual statement about what kind of society we want to create (3 Reasons to be Vegan).
My introduction to the vegan movement came when I was dealing with my own health challenges and it lead me to becoming much more interested in the foods that I was putting in my body. There's a famous quote from Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, in 431 B.C, that goes:
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
In my case, I found this to be great advice. No I avoid eating anything that comes from animals. In other words, no meat, no fish, no milk, no eggs, or any foods that contain any of these things, even chocolate! It seems hard thinking about it. But in actual fact, there are plenty of delicious vegan options when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth.
After getting involved with the vegan movement, it became so easy to see the harmful effects eating meats has on both the animals we manufacture and kill as well as our environment at large.
